Prior to observations, a mixture of rimed snow (needles) and possible freezing drizzle occurred. The precipitations were unrelated to the incoming weather system and were possibly due to the remains of the previous system (event #7) Observations began in the morning at 9:10 on 28 march, very light snow observed at 9:15. The snow continued to fall, lightly at times, until 2:30 on 29 march. At that time, ice pellets mixed with rimed ice crystals were observed. This went on for intermittent periods until 4:50. From 4:50 to 16:00, intermittent snow or light snow was observed. Microphotography was attempted every 10 minutes, but was not always possible if the precipitation melted too quickly or were blown away by wind. During this event, nine weather balloons were launched (at 17:17, 20:13, 21:45, 23:14 UTC on march 28 and 2:21, 5:13, 8:12, 11:31, 14:15 UTC on march 29).

Observations began in the morning at 8:00 UTC, with the first snow observed at 10:20 UTC. Precipitations above ground were measured by Micro Rain Radar during that time but did not reach the ground until 10:20 UTC. The snow continued to fall, lightly at times, until 14:10 UTC. Microphotography was attempted every 10 minutes, but was not always possible if the precipitation melted too quickly. There was a pause in precipitation for a few hours, and then precipitation resumed from 17:30 to 19:20 UTC (periods of rain, as well as mixed precipitation of rain + snow). During this event, five weather balloons were launched (at 8:08, 11:08, 14:01, 17:15, and 20:16 UTC). Observations began at 4:00 UTC and lasted until 14:10 UTC on 12 March. Rain started at 5:40 UTC and lasted until 6:50 UTC. Observations began again at 5:40 UTC until 8:50 UTC on 13 March. Intermittent snow started around 5:45 UTC and was last observed at 8:30 UTC. Microphotography was only possible for one period of 10 minutes. During this event, three weather balloons were launched (at 2:12 and 5:17 UTC on 12 March and at 8:14 UTC on 13 March).
A low pressure system from the Great Lakes reached the Maritimes on the morning of March 1. Storm observations in Edmundston began at 1100 UTC and ended at 0010 UTC. Environment and Climate Change Canada initially forecasted the storm to begin in the early morning hours, but it started a bit later. Light snow began at 1120 UTC, with heavier precipitation beginning at 1250 UTC. Mixed precipitation of snow + ice pellets and snow + snow pellets was observed intermittently throughout the storm, as well as moderate to heavily rimed snow. Although temperatures were relatively mild (above 0°C from 1700 - 2300 UTC), no rain was observed at the site. Microphotography was taken throughout the duration of the storm (attempted every 10 minutes), but it was difficult at times because the snow was melting quickly on the collection pad. The majority of imagery was taken with a Nikon camera, but some additional imagery was collected using an iPad + microscope attachment. During observations, the sky remained completely overcast until it started breaking up around 2350 UTC. Below are some photos taken. The size of the particles are in the order of 0.5 - 4 mm. - Lisa |
